Yes You Can!

Have you ever wanted something super bad and you just know that it’s impossible? Do you want a new car, a new house, maybe a different job or career, or lose weight and get in shape, but you know it will never happen? I want to let you know that no matter what it is in life that you want or dream about, do not give up on it, you can do or have whatever you set your mind on.

We decide for ourselves if we can have or do something just by the thoughts that go on in our brain. We train our brains to believe that we are (or are not) good enough or smart enough to have a new car or house, get our dream job, or even lose weight. We have to think positive thoughts and get rid of any negative thoughts that come into our minds. We need to set goals and have action plans to get to reach those goals and dreams.

I sometimes have to remind myself to get rid of the negative thoughts (if I don’t, my husband sure will let me know!). We will not get very far with a negative attitude because we’ve convinced ourselves that whatever it is that we want is not going to happen anyway, so we will not put forth the effort. You change your thought process, you can change the outcome. I have seen it happen in my life.

We cannot just sit around and expect things to happen for us. We have to make sure that we know we can do whatever we set our minds to do. If you want a new house or a new car, start setting money aside, you will soon be able to have a down payment, and then before you know it you will be signing the papers for your new property. If you want to lose weight and get into shape, start moving, just a little each day, and then you will see that you are capable of being healthy and you will begin to see changes taking place.

Start telling yourself, “Yes, I can” instead of “No, I can’t” and you will be on your way to a much happier you!  Let’s make it a great week and start with a positive note for Monday! What can you do this week to get closer to the goal you’ve been telling yourself you can’t reach?

Let me know your thoughts, I would love to hear from you! Thanks for reading!

Get Up, Get Moving!

Sometimes you just have to force yourself, EVEN WHEN you don’t wanna!!!

Have you ever needed to do something but not very motivated to, and then when you complete the task you were like, “Oh, that wasn’t so bad!”?

I know I go through that quite often. Sometimes you just have to make yourself do the task that you don’t feel like doing. I don’t always have someone around to motivate me, so I need to motivate myself!

Yesterday, I knew all day that I was going to come home from work get on the treadmill. I was motivated and looking forward to it…UNTIL…I got home and had to go downstairs to get on the treadmill and actually turn it on and walk. I kept coming up with reasons why I could wait until tomorrow and was procrastinating…UNTIL…I just forced myself to walk down those stairs and onto that treadmill. I turned on a Podcast from the church that I go to and just listened to the message while I was walking. Before I knew it, I was at a mile, and then I was at a mile and a half. I ended up walking 2 miles, with an incline even, and it was awesome!

I don’t always look forward to cleaning the house, but I do love the outcome! I have a feeling not too many people get excited about scrubbing floors and countertops or cleaning the bathrooms, but, it’s definitely a chore that has to be done. Once I get started, that’s all the motivation that I need! When I see the results of just one area of the house, I’m ready to dive in and clean every square inch of the house; and when I’m finished, I love to sit and enjoy the freshly cleaned house!

What I am trying to say is sometimes we may not feel like doing something, but once we do it, we feel better. You have to do the work in order to enjoy the rewards. I cannot come home from work and sit on the couch and think that my body is going to be in the best possible shape, and unfortunately, the house will not clean itself.

So, whatever you may not be looking forward to doing, just think about the reward at the end. Maybe it’s homework, or a project at work, or training for a marathon…whatever it is…just remember when you put forth the effort, you win the prize at the end.

I’m Back!!!

It’s been toooooo long since I have visited my own blog! Quite a bit has happened during the past year, I won’t go into all the details but it’s been good. I am certainly blessed!

I have found that I’ve not been very focused on me and the things that I need to do in my life to keep me going at full speed. I find that I just get up in the morning, go to work, come home, grab something out for dinner (mostly, occasionally we will cook at home), go to bed and do it all over again the next day. It has gotten a little hum-drum and I definitely need more out of life…so I am turning back to my blog to keep me motivated. Feel free to follow me! I can use the support, and who knows, maybe I can help to inspire someone else!

I believe we all need goals so we know what we want, where we are going and how we will get there. I may be a little late for my “New Year’s Resolutions”,  but we all have to start somewhere.

So I have a few goals that I am going to work on and I will share my progress along the way…

  1. Get in shape! I found that when I was really working out and eating the right foods, I felt so much better! I had more energy, I didn’t get sick and exhausted. I just felt great!  My daughter is getting married next month, so every little bit before the wedding will be an added bonus! And…I am going on a beach vacation this year, so I really want to be in shape for that!  I will be tracking what I eat and will be utilizing the treadmill that my hunny bought for me a few months ago. Three miles a day is great, but I am going to shoot for 3 miles 4 out of 7 days a week. If I do more, that will be a bonus!
  1. Get connected with my spiritual self and just be a better Christian! I am going to explore the world of meditation. I have tried this in the past, it is definitely harder than I thought it would be, but I think the benefits are well worth it. I am also going to spend more time studying the Bible and going to church. I try to keep things in my life pretty positive, but sometimes I need a little help and I just need to ask God to help me along in this journey!
  1. Get my finances in order! Get out of debt!!! First things first…I need to stop spending so much on things that I don’t need! I am sure I do not need to go out to eat as often as I do…that gets pretty expensive (and it’s not all that healthy). Instead of paying for restaurant food, I can eat at home and put that money toward my debt.

Let’s see how far I can get in 90 days!!!  Feel free to join me if you wish!

Love Is In The Air

Love is in the air

My first baby girl is getting married!!!!!!!!! Where did the time go? She is not old enough to have fallen in love and starting her own little family. I am so proud of her and the choices that she has made in her life thus far.

We reserved the ceremony venue today and are making final plans on where she wants to have her reception. She is getting married where she had always dreamed of since she was a little girl. How exciting!

When she was born, I had all these great dreams for her and wanted the very best for her always. She has turned into such a strong woman and the man she has chosen to marry could not be more perfect for her. I am so proud of the two of them and feel so blessed to call him my future son-in-law.

The two of them together will go far and do amazing things in this world. They have so much talent and whatever they decide to, they will succeed.  I am so excited for them as they will be planning their wedding over the next year, but even more excited for the lifetime of love that they will share and experience during their marriage!

Victoria and Thomas I love you guys and wish you all the happiness in the world! So proud of both of you!!!

It’s Time To Regroup

So I guess we all get in our slumps or whatever you want to call it from time to time. For the past couple of weeks I have been so focused on trying to get my new Origami Owl business going; my kids and my husband (who is a teacher) went back to school, and softball and soccer started up again. This leaves everyone going in different directions and needing different things and it kind of crept up on me, I certainly wasn’t prepared.

I have to say that I really have not been focusing on the positive too much – I may have even been focusing a little bit too much on the negative. The past two weeks have been quite challenging for me, and of course everything is working out – thank God!

So with this post I am saying to all of you sometimes we have to regroup, say to ourselves, “yep my car broke down, or yes the credit card company made an error with my account” or whatever the situation may be, and then say “so what! I am not going to let this get to me anymore…it’s time to change focus and recognize of the good that is going on”.

It is so important to recognize this as quickly as possible. Sometimes when you are not feeling all that positive and notice how much negative is “happening” to you, reach out to someone – sometimes it’s just a little chat that helps get you to regroup. I told my sister today about my car breaking down and she called me and asked me what in the world is going on with me the past couple of weeks and I couldn’t explain it, but she sure could. She said maybe you haven’t been focusing on positive enough, maybe you are bringing the negative in. She told me, “maybe you need to regroup” and boy was she right!

It is time to get back on the positive train! LOOK OUT, Positive Patty is back!!!

St. Louis

The purpose of my blog site is positivity (hence the name iampositivepatty), I try really hard to find the positive in everything that I post and in different situations that I encounter in life. Sometimes keeping it on the positive side is really hard and I have to remind myself when I am being negative to turn it around or my attitude totally changes.

So with that being said, I cannot find anything positive about what is going on in the city of St. Louis.

A young man was killed by a police officer; yes I am sure it was completely unnecessary. The police need to investigate the situation and the family needs to bury their son and be able to grieve their child. Unfortunately, this has not been able to happen on either side.

People are on the streets destroying property that does not belong to them; they burned down a gas station and tons of other things are too many to list. All of the law enforcement and the reporters are all putting their lives in danger to protect the town of Ferguson. I heard that all of these riots are for justice for the young man that was gunned down. I certainly do not understand how this is in any way justice. The family has asked for the riots to stop, I am sure most of the people in these riots were not even acquainted with the young man.

My point is I am so disappointed in St. Louis; I grew up here and this is my home and this is not how we want to portray our city. We need to do positive things not destroy the things around us. Unfortunately, Michael Brown cannot come back and this is a horrible thing and I am very saddened for his family and his friends; riots and destruction will not make anything better.

Please pray for St. Louis, all of the law enforcement, the reporters who are keeping us updated on the happenings and all of the people who are involved in the riots and most of all the family who needs to take time to grieve.

Run Away From The Gossip!

Have you ever been the topic of someone else’s conversation? Do you remember how you felt when you heard these people were talking about you? Gossip – it’s mean!!!

I remember a time in my life when I was struggling with a major life change and I found out people were talking about it when I was not around. First of all, these people were gossiping about something that they did not have all of the facts about and second of all it was none of their business!

What I am trying to say here is don’t let yourself get caught up in gossip. I am sure you have something better to do with your time than gossip with someone. When you are talking with a friend, instead of gossiping, how about talking about each other’s hopes and dreams and goals. Talk about how you can help each other and encourage each other to reach your dreams and goals.

When someone is going through a crisis, the last thing they need is to have everybody talking about their situation behind their back. Hearing from different people he said or she said is really hurtful and it can ruin friendships or even cause problems within families.

So when someone wants to chat with you about what’s going on with the family next door or some other person, change the subject or turn the negative into a positive.

Keep On Learning!!!

Do you ever stop to think about the amount of things that you learn in a day. The old saying, “you learn something new every day” should be taken to heart. Don’t ever stop learning!!!

So many people get stuck in a rut and stay at the same job and don’t ever take the chance to grow in the company. Some people just live life day to day and don’t really expect much from themselves, other than to get through the day to start over the next day and do the same thing.

I had a teacher tell me once that our brains are like car engines – if you don’t use them, they won’t run. She told me to never stop learning. So I encourage you to do whatever it takes to keep your brain from becoming “rusty”.

There are so many things you can do to improve yourself. Pick up a book and start reading. Talk to someone who is an expert in something that you are interested in or who is where you want to be. You can learn so much from other people. If you want to advance in your job, find out what is required and then do it! If you need to take classes, find out if your company will offer tuition reimbursement.

Go back to college – you’re not too old – I started college when I was 36 years old and graduated with my Bachelor’s degree when I was 40. That was such an amazing feeling when I got my diploma. That took some grueling hours and hard work, but I gained so much insight about myself and what I was studying that it made the hard work worth it!

Find something of interest to you and become an expert in it – try new recipes for dinner, start knitting or quilting. There are so many things out there, don’t ever stop learning!

Impacting a Child’s Life

For every one of us that succeeds, it’s because there’s somebody there to show you the way out. The light doesn’t always necessarily have to be in your family; for me it was teachers and school. – Oprah Winfrey

This is an awesome quote and I thought this is perfect timing as students are getting ready to go back to school for a new year.

Teachers can have such an influence on students. One example that I am so grateful for is my oldest daughter’s first grade teacher. She probably does not realize what an impact she had on my daughter. Victoria ended up graduating from high school the top of her class as Valedictorian and I believe that her first grade teacher was a huge influence on this accomplishment.

This teacher told Victoria every day that she was so talented and that she could be whatever she wanted to be in life. She taught her to write stories, and use her imagination and her talents. Victoria will start her third year in college in a couple of weeks. Her goal is to become a doctor – and I know that she will not let anything get in her way!

My thought about the quote from Oprah is teachers may not always realize it, but they can make a huge impact in the successes of their students. They always encourage students to work hard and make good things happen in their lives. A teacher may think that you are not getting through to them today, but their student may come back in several years and tell let this teacher know how much they impacted their life. My husband is a high school teacher and we have run into some of his past students while being out and they have thanked him for teaching them and preparing them for college.

Parents do not take your children’s teachers for granted. These people have devoted their lives to enriching your child’s life. Think about Oprah’s childhood; she credits her teachers and her schools for her inspiration. I believe teachers, principals, counselors and coaches are a huge part of our children’s lives and we should be grateful for all of the wonderful educators who make such an impact in the lives of those students.

Be You

Be yourselfDon’t lose who you are by trying to impress others – let them love you for who you are! Sometimes we want to impress others so badly we compromise ourselves in the process.

I remember watching The Devil Wears Prada a long time ago. The girl, Andy, wanted to work for Miranda Priestly so bad she went out of her way to try to impress her. She was a nice girl who had good values about herself, until she got involved in this job. She was losing her closest friends and boyfriend because she was trying way too hard for this job. She did not show up when she told her boyfriend she would be there, she spent most of her time working and stressing over impress Miranda Priestly.

I am sure we all have a Miranda Priestly in our lives. We should not go out of our way to impress these people. Of course we want to do our best and go above and beyond for our jobs, and we want to be good to our friends and significant others. But anyone who cares about you and loves you will love you for who you are and they would not expect you to be someone who you are not.

In my past I spent a lot of time trying to impress other people and doing things that other people thought would be good for me. A few years ago, I stopped trying to impress everyone around me and decided to start doing what I thought was good for me and discovered myself. I realize that I am not so bad and I don’t need to go out of my way and be someone who I am not in order to impress or please others around me.

So don’t worry about what anyone else thinks of you, don’t lose who you are – because you are awesome! Let others love you for who you truly are!
